Construction of Perception

As I scroll through my Instagram feed I notice all these incredible adventures that people are going on, but is this just a constructed perception?

This photo is from my Instagram page of 16 year old Ruby, in New York. I captioned this post “ice skating” but I can’t skate to save my life. If you think I’m joking, I’m not.

The reality of this photo is that my hand is holding onto that railing bar as tight as you could imagine. I waddled onto the ice, had my best friend snap a few photos and slid straight back to normal ground. That was me ‘ice skating’.

What I’m trying to say is, this photo of me looks like I am all chill on the ice (pun not intended), when it was really just a constructed perception that I wanted my followers to think I was doing that day.

What can I say? I’m a master at construction of perception.

Love Yourself, R.

  1. Hey dude, super cute blog post, the personal angle was really fun and personable (who hasn’t fudged the reality of a situation to make it more Insta worthy, that’s what filters are for right?). The entire thing unpacked the concept of framing in a really down to earth and fun way. The only thing is that your post doesn’t have an obvious remediation, and that’s a big part of your mark, so it might be worth making one or editing the text to let us know where it is.
Love the good work (and here’s to doing our online presence early!)

  2. As you’ve effectively demonstrated, everything on social media has to be taken with a grain of salt. A few Youtubers I know of, such as Gabbie Hanna, “faked going to Coachella” on their instagram and it’s amazing how almost nobody noticed that they weren’t actually there! Check out the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pau_joGIhc0 . I also agree with what Josh said about including a clear remediation which should be either a meme, gif, podcast or youtube video. I focused more on legacy media within my post and how understanding more about framing has changed the way I analyse news stories! https://josephinedoylemedia.wordpress.com/2019/04/30/framing-and-the-construction-of-perception/

  3. Hey again!! I love love loveeee this blog post! Your post allowed me to understand how an Instagram post can be hiding the reality of what actually happened while the image was being taken! It is honestly amazing how many people can fake going somewhere or doing something online! because of course everyone will believe they went, just because of a photo or video! i love how you included your own personal examples and instagram! Check out my blog post for the topic!
