Open and Closed Sources

Honestly, I couldn’t even describe to you what a ‘software’ is, simply because I am not the tech savvy teen I should be. On top of this, I didn’t even know online programs had ‘codes’. Yes, I AM in fact, an idiot.

So, what are open and closed sources?

Well, I learnt that an open source is where the “source code is publicly available” which users can change as they desire. An example of an open source would be WordPress as we create the way our websites look and modify the codes … I took a guess with that one.

A closed source is an online application that we don’t have access to the ‘codes’ and cannot modify what we are using. The majority of the applications that we use are closed sources and are Microsoft Office and Skype.

After researching more into it, I genuinely found this interesting. Maybe I’m destined to be in IT … ha jokes.

That wasn’t funny.

  1. Love the meme. I think it touches on the point that people with iPhones are generally looked upon as those who aren’t as technologically advanced. I mean if my 4 year old nephew can use an iPhone as well as me, I think it’s fair to say that they are not too complex to the consumer. As for you not thinking that you’re technologically savvy, I for one think your layout on wordpress is great and easy to navigate. Being able to install a widget such as twitter onto your page is an example of this being an open source. Nice post!

  2. I really like how you described open and closed sources in simple terms, it made it easier to understand the concept of both. I also like how you gave examples of what open and closed sources are by talking about sources that readers are familiar with (WordPress, Microsoft Office, Skype). Lastly, I really liked your use of visuals- it was very effective, especially your meme!
