Ideating – Project Five

Project Five is a YouTube channel run by five friends who are; myself, Ava Di Donato, Isabella Mallon, Caitlin Koloski and Charlotte Pierro. This channel is dedicated to improving our happiness and entertaining young adults.

our channel.

The process of ideating this project stemmed from the book ‘The Happiness Project’ written by Gretchen Rubin. Rubin realises that she wants to create a more happier so her idea was to pick an aspect of her life and month by month slowly change that aspect of her life (example: her relationship, work life, family etc) by making it more positive. Her goal was that by the end of the year to be an overall happier individual.

the book: the happiness project

Therefore, for our DA we thought to manipulate this idea to fit our own vibe. The first step we completed was to come up with what we would upload on our channel. In this process we decided to google ‘things that make you happier’ and use those ideas for weekly challenges to test and see if they actually do make people happier.

After this we needed to decide how we would curate these videos which is where we discovered to vlog 10 seconds of our day throughout the week, Monday – Friday, then come together on the weekend to film and talk about our overall week and rate our happiness.

We came up with the name ‘Project Five’ as there are 5 of us and we are doing a challenge for 5 days of the week.

Then it was time to begin our DA and start filming and editing. I put a poll on Twitter asking other BCM students what they would like to see us accomplish for the first week.

As you can see, by 42%, no complaining won and therefore we started our week. We filmed Monday – Friday, got together at the end of the week and before we knew it our first video was up and live. Last week was definitely a challenge as having to remember to film plus collecting everyone’s videos was probably the biggest issue we had which was an easy fix.

After uploading this video, we are now able to learn and improve upon our editing, filming and overall channels aesthetic. We have come to the conclusion that along with the weekly challenges, we will also film in different ways to keep our audience entertained. After looking through the analytics section on our channel, viewers seem to click off the video around the 3/4 minute mark, meaning they prefer our vlogs over us sitting and talking. We will change this by talking about our weeks through drive with us, mukbangs and so on.

Hopefully, by the end of this semester we will have a more engaging audience and have discovered how to entertain young adults in our own way.

Until Next Time, R.

  1. Hey!
I really like this idea, and the thought of sharing content from within a group that’s on a positive level is a notion that’s really cool and I feel that lots of people will be able to get around. The vibe in itself is essentially who you are, so by vlogging yourselves for a couple of seconds each day (from what I understand) and compiling a weekly video on YouTube, to me, it doesn’t feel like you’ll have to try to hard to keep putting out regular content and still keep being yourselves!
If your content really does start taking off, maybe consider finding ways to crowdfund, maybe on patreon or something similar, that way you can start incorporating more features to your DA, like a fan site amongst many other possibilities, then your followers can find a way to connect with you all on a deeper level on your journeys of positivity, and who knows, a project like this could eventually become your job!
As a final note, if the group is looking for music to use royalty and copyright free in the background of any of your videos, that’s what I’ll be creating for my DA which you can check out here: https://pjng97.home.blog/2019/08/24/developing-on-the-ideation-of-my-da/ I’ll be making many kinds of music, and I’m more than willing to make music that fit around others projects too!

Can’t wait to see how this project turns out!

  2. Hey guys!
I love this idea so much for a DA! I think it’s really unique and has probably never been done before. The style of vlogging that you’re using makes it relatable for a teenage/young adult audience to watch (as we are so used to watching influencers/YouTubers vlogging all the time). I think you did a really good job at making the video flow even though you had so much different footage. I feel like something you will have to be careful with in this project is making sure that your videos don’t run too long. I felt that this video was the perfect length, but any longer videos and viewers might get distracted! I also really enjoyed the way that you created a feed-back loop by asking Twitter for your first challenge. Maybe you could do this each week by using Twitter or Instagram-story polls to make your viewers feel more involved, I plan on doing this for my own DA by asking my Instagram followers what they think I should cook! Overall, I loved your first video and I’m excited to see how this DA progresses!

  3. Hey guys
I think that this idea is great and unique. I think that vlogging is a very good way to keep your audience entertained and engaged. This idea for your DA is awesome because I feel as though this does not have to stop after the assignment, there is so much room for “project 5” to grow. I love the research conducted on twitter with what video they wanted to see. I feel as though that’s a great way to please your audience, know what they want and deliver the best content to receive the most views and positive experiences back. I also thought your analytics breakdown on your youtube video was very good and it really pinpoints the spots in your video that has the most/least engagement. Also the idea to do this in a group of 5 is very refreshing as each member has something different to offer the group. The length of your video is roughly the average video length for a youtube video ( 7 minutes) which I think is good however if you can get all that great content into a bit shorter video the engagement might be a little higher as the average viewer stayed for 3 and a half minutes. Other than that I thought it was awesome!!

  4. Hey Roo,
I loved the structure of your blog post and the way you collated your information and opinions in a really simple to follow way. I feel like having the structure you did of laying out each step of our development process clearly portrayed exactly what it was and how we wanted our videos to be viewed and the work we put into getting the outcomes we have with our channel. Your post was a great stepping stone for us as a group to analyse what we have already and done and what we must improve on and gives clarity on possible new ideas for future videos.
